Dragon Boat Singer
This painting is believed to be done in late 1920s to early 1930s, it is a 136 x 112.3 cm four scrolls painting, the person in the painting is a dragon boat singer that used to go door to door to sing or chant verses of luck and fortune in order to get some money in return, the bamboo dragon boat had some mechanism covered by the cloth, when the person sang, he would trigger the mechanism to move the paddles and human figures, he also carried a small gong and hand drum on his body so he could beat out some rhythm when he sang, I think there is no body doing this anymore since the early 1960s.

IMMORTALITY VS OBLIVION
Immortality vs Oblivion is an ink and color painting by my Grandfather when he was 27 years old, the painting had been chosen as the front cover of a Sotheby auction in 2005. The printing measures 171 by 92 cm. with the portrait of Mr. Sun Yat Sen, father of modern China, on top of a mountain and a skeleton diving after a feather. This printing contains the meaning of a Chinese idiomatic phrase saying that a person's death can be heavy as a mountain or can be light as a feather.

My Grandfather
I had stumbled upon a blog written in Chinese while surfing the webs and saw the name of my Grandfather, I read the article and then searched with Google using his name in Chinese and I was amazed that there are so many people had written about him from My Grandfather’s name is Huang Shao Qiang who was born in 1901 and passed away in 1942. Huang Shao Qiang was one of the most talented and acclaimed contemporary artist from China and that his paintings style belonged to the Lingnan (south of the mountains) painting school of China .
Talent, skill and originality were my Grandfather’s virtuoso, unlike most of Chinese artists at his time who specialized in landscape scenery, flowers, birds or by miming styles of early artists and paintings, which would make the artworks diverted away from reality, Huang Shao Qiang originated his paintings on real people especially the poor, in anatomical details, his idea is to let the people aware of the down and outs through his paintings. Huang Shao Qiang had built a style of his own by combing the fine quality of Chinese arts with the reality characteristic of western painting skills. Sotheby Hong Kong had used one of my Grandfather’s painting for front cover in one of the auctions in 2005.
I will write more about my Grandfather, his paintings and his poems on and off in my blog here, on top is a painting of his from the collection of The Guangdong Museum of Art.
